Types of Box Measurements You Need

To measure a box, you will need the following tools: a tape measure and a ruler.

Note: When you take your measurements, round each one to the nearest whole inch. This keeps your numbers consistent and makes it easier to compare against standard box sizes later. 

Here is how you can measure the exterior of your box:

Step 1: Measure The Box Length

Place your box on a flat surface and use a tape measure or ruler to measure its length. To measure the length, determine the longest side of your box and measure it from left to right.

Step 2: Measure The Box Width

Once you have determined the length, it’s time to measure the width. You have to measure the shortest side of the box from left to right using a ruler or a tape measure. This way, you will have the width of your box.

Step 3: Measure The Box Height/Depth

Now, all that is left to measure is the height/depth of your box. You have to place your box upright to measure its height. You have to measure it from top to bottom to get the height.

Note: Do not include the box flaps when measuring the height. Length and width are usually measured on the panel with the flaps, but height is measured on the side without them. Simply measure the standing wall from top to bottom, leaving the flap out.

Measure Box Inner Dimensions

Now that you know how to measure the box’s exterior dimensions, it’s time to learn how to measure the interior dimensions of your product packaging.

Just like the exterior dimensions, you need three measurements for your box’s inner dimensions: length, width, and height!

Here’s how you can measure your box’s inner dimensions:

1. Open the Box: You have to unfold the box and lay it out flat if possible.
2. Measure the Length:
   • The longest side of the box’s interior.
   • Place a measuring tape along the bottom edge of the box.
3. Measure the Width:
   • The shorter side is at the bottom.
   • Measure from one inside wall to the other.
4. Measure the Depth (Height):
   • From the bottom interior to the top edge.

Note: Always record the measurements in this order: Length × Width × Depth. Additionally, you can also leave some space when measuring the inner dimension if inserts are required.
