Measure Your Box Dimensions: A Comprehensive Guide

Table of Contents

It’s important to measure your box dimensions correctly to get your product to fit perfectly in a box. Even a single mistake in taking measurements can mess up the box’s shape and design.

Getting the accurate dimensions for your box is crucial as it reflects the choices like material selection, box style, and warehouse cost. It might look simple to take measurements, but there is more to custom box dimensions. In this blog post, we will talk about the exterior and inner dimensions of the box.

Let’s dig in!

Why Do Measurements Matter In Box Design?

When ordering custom boxes, measurements play an important role as they define how your box is going to look. From box design to selection of material and warehouse costing, it all depends on the measurements. Your box needs to be manufactured with proper dimensions so your product can be placed in it. The product box acts like a storage house for your product that extends its shelf life.

With so much at stake, it’s important to have accurate box dimensions on the first try!

Types of Box Measurements You Need

Now that you know why box dimensions matter, let’s discuss which box measurements you need. There are three basic dimensions that you need to measure for your box. They are mentioned below:

  • Length
  • Width
  • Height/Depth

Getting these dimensions accurate means you will be manufacturing the box that can store your product perfectly while providing maximum protection.

To measure a box, you will need the following measuring tools: a measuring tape and a ruler.

Step 1: Measure The Box Length

Place your box on a flat surface and use a measuring tape or a ruler to measure the length. To measure the length, you have to determine the longest side of your box and measure it from left to right.

Step 2: Measure The Box Width

Once you have determined the length, it’s time to measure the width. You have to measure the shortest side of the box from left to right with the help of a ruler or a measuring tape. This way, you will have the width of your box.

Step 2: Measure The Box Height/Depth

Now, all that is left to measure is the height/depth of your box. You have to place your box in a standing position to measure the height. You have to measure it from top to bottom to get the height.

Measure Box Inner Dimensions

Now that you know how to measure the box’s exterior dimensions, it’s time to learn how to measure the interior dimensions of your product packaging.

Just like exterior dimensions, you need to have three measurements for your box’s inner dimensions: length, width, and height!

Here’s how you can measure your box’s inner dimensions:

  1. Open the Box: You have to unfold the box and lay it out flat if possible.
  2. Measure the Length:
    • The longest side of the box’s interior.
    • Place a measuring tape along the bottom edge of the box.
  3. Measure the Width:
    • The shorter side is at the bottom.
    • Measure from one inside wall to the other.
  4. Measure the Depth (Height):
    • From the bottom interior to the top edge.

Note: Always record the measurements in this order: Length × Width × Depth. Additionally, you can also leave some space when measuring the inner dimension if inserts are required.

How to calculate the Volume of a box?

Do you know that calculating the volume of a box is as essential as its dimensions? By calculating the volume of your box, you can determine how much space it will occupy when stacked in the warehouse.

Here is how you can calculate the volume of your box: length x width x height.

Please note that the final measurement units will be cubed.
